Eaton Boomers have caused a stirring and thrilling boilover when they defeated Harvey Bulls at Harvey Oval on Saturday afternoon by four points in round nine of the South West Football League.
In overcast conditions Callum Radecki kicked off the scoring for the Eaton Boomers, followed by a goal to Jakeob Phillips to see the Boomers
lead by two goals at the half way point of the first quarter. The Bulls who won the toss and elected to kick into a slight breeze, scored their first goal late in the quarter to see the visitors lead by 4 points at quarter time.
The second quarter replicated the first, with the Boomers kicking the first two goals of the second quarter, with Phillips kicking his second and Nic Hodgson kicking a goal soon after to see the Boomers open a 15 point lead. The Bulls did finally kick a goal but missed some easy shots, kicking five behinds for the quarter, with six points separating the teams at the main break.
In the third quarter, Eaton dominated, again kicking the first two goals of the quarter, and when Jordan Falco kicked two goals in three minutes in time on, the margin had ballooned out to a game high twenty six points. The game then was turned on its head, with Bradley Holmes kicking a goal as a result of a 50m penalty, followed by a second goal for abuse without the ball going back to the middle of the ground, narrowing the margin to 14 points at the final change.
Harvey’s chances of stealing the win were hampered by light rain which fell for the bulk of the final quarter, but when Holmes kicked the opening goal of the final term the margin was reduced to eight points. In a tense final quarter, the umpires put the whistles away, with the very good sized crowd becoming vocal in the concluding stages, particularly when Harvey kicked a goal late in the match, reducing the margin to three points. The final minutes were played in the Boomers forward line, with a late snap, brushing the goal post, making the margin four points, giving the Bulls one final chance, however as soon as the ball was kicked in the final siren sounded, giving the win-less Boomers their first points of the season, taking them off the bottom of the ladder.
Harvey’s season of close finishes continued, with two results in two weeks where the margin has been four points or less, combined with a draw in round four. The Bulls will head to Kelly Park next Sunday to take on Carey Park, after beating them in the opening round of the season by 16 points. Eaton Boomers will take on Bunbury, also on Sunday at Glen Huon Reserve.
