Eagles Storm Home To Win

The Collie Eagles have defeated South Bunbury in the opening game of round twelve of the South West Football League, on Saturday night at JE Hands Memorial Oval in Bunbury.

The last time the two teams met at the venue was in last years Grand Final, where the Eagles were embarrassed with a poultry scoreline, but there would be no repeat on a wet and soggy Hands Oval, after constant rain fell right up to the start of the League encounter.

Kicking with a handy breeze to the City end, the Tigers managed just one goal, in a tight opening quarter.

When Ryan Bennell managed to kick a goal at the start of the second quarter which just cleared the goal line, South Bunbury stretched the lead to fourteen points, which looked significant in the trying conditions.  The Eagles eventually kicked truly through Jayce Fontana, with the visitors taking the lead near half time.

South Bunbury were not to be denied, kicking three goals in the third quarter including a goal to Leigh Kohlmann who would end the night with three goals of his own.  The home team would lead by eight points at the final break as the rain clouds hovered over the oval.

Collie, who had managed just four goals in the opening three quarters, kicked four goals in eight minutes at the start of the final quarter, to lead by sixteen points.  The rain then returned to make life impossible for the Tigers.  South Bunbury did rally, narrowing the margin to ten points, but when Jayce Fontana kicked his fourth from a snap from the behind post, South’s fate was sealed.

The Collie Eagles would eventually win by 18 points, and for Saturday night at least, move to the top of the table, equal on points with Harvey Brunswick Leschenault.  South Bunbury remain in the five, after Augusta Margaret River thrashed an under-manned Eaton Boomers at Gloucester Park.
