Hawks Win Battle Of The Birds

Augusta Margaret River defeated the Collie Eagles on a smokey Saturday afternoon at the Collie Recreation Ground by 29 points, set up by a six goal first term.

Despite and enterprising start with Jack Dye kicking the opening goal in the first two minutes for the home team, a thirteen minute burst by the Hawks where they kicked six straight, effectively put an end to the contest, with the margin see-sawing between 25-35 points for the remainder of the match.   Mitch Payne kicked three of the opening term goals, which also included a pack mark and a big leap on the goal line.

The Eagles started the second quarter like the first with a quick goal to Bailey Moloney, but that was quickly negated by a goal to Ricky Cary, who ended the match with three goals.

Both teams kicked three goals each in the third quarter, with the margin 34 points at the final break.  Collie never gave up, and to their credit, won the final quarter and the second half, with the final margin 29 points.

The Eagles will be at home again next Saturday afternoon, with another tough opponent in ladder leaders Harvey Brunswick Leschenault, while Augusta Margaret River will play Busselton in the traditional Southern Derby on Sunday afternoon for the Busselton Toyota Cup
