Harvey Brunswick Leschenault have kept their unbeaten run in tact after a hard fought win at Brunswick Oval on Saturday, against previously unbeaten Eaton Boomers.
The Lions started brilliantly, kicking the opening three goals of the match inside five minutes, with goals to Kristin Thornton, Geoff Saunders and Sean Bradley, with the home team totally dominating possession.
Eaton to their credit fought back strongly, kicking the next five goals, with Jarrod Humphries, Mitch Kings, Brandon Jetta and Karl Collard getting the visitors on top at the first change.
Twelve minutes elapsed in the second quarter before Thornton took a strong pack mark to get the Lions back within five points, but that was immediately answered at the other end with a soccer goal to the Boomers to extend the margin back to eleven points. When Jarrod Humphries kicked a long range goal the margin was seventeen points, and the Boomers seemed have control of the game. A late goal to the Lions had the margin at even two goals at half time.
Thornton goaled straight after half time as the Lions made their move, but again the Boomers replied immediately. Ty Anderson ran into an open goal to make the margin four points at the ten minute mark of the third quarter, but this was again negated immediately, this time courtesy of a 50m penalty, with the Boomers back out by ten points. David Newman reduced the margin back to four points at the fifteen minute mark, with neither team able to score a goal after this point, as the tempo increased in what was a good game of football.
David Newman kicked his third goal at the two minute mark of the final term, putting the Lions in front for the first time since the fifteen minute mark of the first quarter. Taine Williams put the Lions a goal in front at the six minute mark, while the Boomers couldn’t take their chances at the other end, missing three set shots from 30m, all of which would have put them back in front.
In a thrilling final few minutes the ball went from end to end, with the Lions running out victors by ten points.
The Lions will travel to VC Mitchell Park next Sunday to take on the reigning premiers in Donnybrook, while Eaton Boomers will take on Harvey Bulls at Glen Huon Reserve, also on Sunday.
