Bulldogs Win Goal-Fest At Gloucester Park

Bunbury have defeated Augusta Margaret River on Saturday afternoon in an extraordinary match at Gloucester Park, which yielded 39 goals in round twenty of the SWFL.

Bunbury’s win ends the Hawks defence of the Premiership, with the Bulldogs now guaranteed to play finals in 2023.

The match started with three quick goals to the Bulldogs, two of which were kicked by Brandon Gregory, with the Hawks hardly touching the ball.  Soon after Matt Martin marked and goaled and when Gregory did likewise to convert his third, Bunbury led by 30 points after just twelve minutes.  The Hawks were in more strife when Matt Martin kicked another with the home team still scoreless.  Eventually at the 16 minute mark the Hawks did goal, but the scoring continued at the other end, with Bunbury kicking nine goals in an inspired first term.  Denholm King had a multitude of possessions through the middle of the ground, setting up many forward thrusts.

The home side were 37 points behind after the opening term, and looked totally outclassed.  In a remarkable second quarter, eleven goals were kicked, with the Hawks kicking seven goals, pulling the margin back to fifteen points, with Kalani Brooks having an influence up forward.

Bunbury would add six goals in the third, with Joel Houghton and Matt Martin the main players up forward, as the margin ballooned out to 39 points at the final change.

Augusta Margaret River would win the last quarter, but would lose the match by 27 points, with both teams kicking incredibly accurately.  The Hawks score of 17.7 (109) is the highest losing score this season and the combined total score is the highest since 17 June 2018 when Eaton Boomers defeated Harvey Bulls 121 – 105.

The win ensures Bunbury will play finals with matches against South Bunbury and Harvey Bulls to come.   Should Donnybrook defeat South Bunbury on Sunday, Bunbury could move to fourth place on the ladder if they beat the Tigers in round twenty one, highlighting the importance of the win.
