The biggest home and away match of the season made it to half time before officials deemed the match incomplete, after an impressive half time lightning show accompanied by thunder, gave Bunbury the victory over arch rivals South Bunbury at a rain soaked Hands Oval.
The weather forecast was always for an afternoon deluge, which many thought fell during the second quarter of the Women’s match, but a further front hit during the League fixture, making vision almost impossible even with the flood lights on. During the half time break the sky was lit with lightning, which initially led to an extended half time break. The weather front persisted leaving General Manager Jason Crowe with no option but to call the match off for the safety of players and officials. To be deemed safe to play the Thunder and Lightning must be at least 30 seconds a part, all strikes were between 12 -18 seconds a part, which is too close to continue according to the Lightning policy. The Bureau of Meteorology reported 28mm of rain in a 30 minute period at the time of the match being called off.
Prior to the weather intervention, Bunbury dominated the match with Matt Martin kicking the opening goal at the two minute mark. Dylan Heasman goaled from long range shortly after, and when Scott Doncon goaled from deep in the pocket the Bulldogs led by 17 points. Joel Houghton would then kick two goals in three minutes late in the quarter to give the visitors a 31 point lead at Quarter Time.
Adam Hunter soccered a goal to start the second quarter before the heavens opened making visibility almost impossible. Just before half time Bunbury scored again giving them a 33 point lead, which ultimately would be the final score.
