Bunbury Down The Dons In Boyanup

Bunbury have defeated Donnybrook at Boyanup Oval on Sunday afternoon, in round eight of the Dale Alcock Homes South West, SWFL Premiership season, by 23 points.

The match started in pouring rain, and it took eight minutes for the opening goal of the game, and when Joel Houghton snapped a goal six minutes later, the Bulldogs led by twelve points.  Two quick goals to Donnybrook leveled the scores in the tricky conditions, but Cooper Nitschke put Bunbury back in front with a handy goal just before quarter time.

With blustery winds and rain showers intermittently coming across the oval, goals were hard to come by but Mason Hawkes managed to kick a fantastic goal from deep in the pocket to open the margin back to twelve points.   Hawkes would then kick a goal on the run in the same pocket to extend the margin to three goals, a game high.   Matt Martin on the stroke of half time, kicked a long range goal for the Dons, as Bunbury enjoyed a 14 point margin at the major break.

The start of the third term is where the real damage was done with Denholm King kicking a goal from deep in the pockets and Jackson Oliver converting from in front, giving the visitors a 27 point lead.  From this point on, it was goal for goal, with the margin fluctuating between 20-30 points, ultimately finishing with a Bulldogs win by 23 points.

Seasoned campaigners, Dylan Heasman, Harry Creasy, Jesse Gribble and Captain, Denholm King, all had plenty of the ball for Bunbury.  Sam Perkusich played a good game for Donnybrook and took the mark of the match late in dull conditions, while Matt Martin also did well considering the conditions really didn’t suit full forwards.

The win elevates Bunbury to third who will play fourth placed Augusta Margaret River in round nine on Sunday, while Donnybrook drop to fifth and will travel Kelly Park to take on sixth placed Carey Park on Saturday.
