Can Closest Season Ever Deliver Closest Finals Ever?

After an amazing season, the closest in the history of the SWFL, can the SWFL Finals deliver the closest finals series ever?

If they do, it will certainly be an amazing Finals series, with the closest finals series of all time being in 1977, when the biggest winning margin was just 13 points.

The Elimination Final was held at PC Payne Park and Augusta Margaret River won by 3 points, where rumours still abound today of a late goal that was either touched or missed, which ultimately bundled out Harvey Brunswick, who a year earlier played in the Grand Final.

Across town, the Qualifying Final was even closer with South Bunbury, the defending premiers, getting home against Boyanup Capel Dardanup by just one point.

A week later, Boyanup Capel Dardanup and Augusta Margaret River would play in the First Semi Final, with there being no more than 10 points separating either team throughout the match.  As like the week before, the game went right to the wire, with the Cardies getting home by two points.

Meanwhile, for the second week in a row, South Bunbury would prevail by a point, defeating Donnybrook in a thriller.  Donnybrook who were the minor premiers kicked more goals than the Tigers, but the red and whites got home and advanced to the Grand Final, kicking a very inaccurate 12.23.95.

The Preliminary Final was played before a crowd of more than 3500, with Donnybrook ending the hopes of Boyanup Capel Dardanup, who were looking to make just their second ever Grand Final.  The Dons won by 13 points.

The Grand Final would see Donnybrook take on South Bunbury for the second time in the finals series.  In 1976, Donnybrook lost the first semi final to Carey Park by 3 points, so by making the Grand Final they had lost two finals by a combined total of 4 points, while winning the other by just 13 points.  It was just their third ever appearance in a Grand Final, while for South Bunbury they had appeared in 1974 and 1976.   More than 6000 fans turned up and crammed into Hands Memorial Oval to witness history, as Donnybrook won their first ever Grand Final by two goals.

Can it be replicated 40 years later in 2017 with the combined winning margin being 32 points or an average of 5.33 points per game?
