Colts Start Title Defence With A Win

The Apprentice & Traineeship Colts team have started their CBH Group Country Championship title defence with a win, when they downed Great Southern Storm by 19 points at Lain Group Stadium, Mandurah on Thursday afternoon.

The opening half saw both teams have periods of ascendancy as light rain fell, with Ryan Lazar of the Great Southern kicking the opening goal.  The South West struck back immediately with Hayze Griffiths intercepting a kick out of defence, goaling from deep in the pocket.  Sebastian Hiscox would be on the end of a great passage of play from one end to the other, extending the advantage to eight points.   A goal after the half time siren to Lazar, narrow the margin back to two points.

The SW Colts side had work to do, and it became harder when Harvey Taylor of the Great Southern converted a set shot, giving the Storm the lead.   The lead was short lived, as Matthew Burgess snapped a good goal from a boundary throw-in, followed by a goal from Deegan Cummings from a set shot, giving the South West a seven point lead.   Some desperate defence kept the Storm from scoring, with Robert Chitty kicking the South West’s fifth goal with some excellent roving off the pack.  Hayze Griffiths would complete the match with a second goal courtesy of a 50m penalty, giving the South West a 19 point win.

In earlier matches Great Northern thrashed Avon by 59 points, while Peel defeated Regional Districts by 5 points.   The South West will play Kimberley Spirit at 3.30pm this afternoon.
