Dons Advance, Lions Eliminated

Donnybrook have won the first ever Women’s Elimination Final at Kelly Park on Friday night, defeating Harvey Brunswick Leschenault by 37 points.

Donnybrook won the toss and elected to kick into a handy breeze, but the Lions were not able to capitalise despite having plenty of possessions.  Eventually the Dons went coast to coast to record the first and only goal of the first term.

Long kicking was a feature in the second term, with both Lacey Holdsworth and Beth Bond kicking goals from long range, giving the Dons a 22 point lead at half time.

The third quarter belonged to the Lions who attacked relentlessly but weren’t able to find the major opening, kicking three behinds in quick succession.  Like the first term a quick transference landed in the hands of Beth Bond who kicked her second goal from close range to extend the Dons advantage to 25 points at the final break.

The Lions never gave up, and try as they might the couldn’t break the Dons defence, with Bond and Holdsworth both kicking a major in the final term, with the final margin 37 points.

Jess Verbrugge and Shelley Hull played good games for the Dons, while Lauren Patane was involved in plenty of the action, along with Claire Brown.
