Dons Win A Thriller

Donnybrook have defeated Augusta Margaret River on Sunday afternoon, in the final round of the Dale Alcock Homes SW premiership season.

Under overcast skies, the Dons needed to beat the Hawks by around 90 points to claim third spot and a double chance, but it was evident early this would not be possible as the heavens opened, and the match started in persistent rain.

Ben Howlett got the Dons off to the perfect start with a goal in the first five minutes, courtesy of a free kick.  After the initial goal, ten minutes went by with no scoring at all, as both teams tried to assert their authority on the contest.  Matt Bannister eventually equalised for the Hawks with a clever snap, before Sam Perkusich put the Dons back in front, slotting a goal from in front of the scoreboard, made more difficult by very blustery conditions.   Tyson McWilliam snapped a goal in time on as the Dons led by two goals at quarter time.

Both teams traded goals in the second quarter, with current Hayward Medalist, Simon Moore kicking two goals for the quarter as the Hawks narrowed the margin to nine points at half time.

The third quarter belonged to the Hawks, and the Dons knew they had a fight on their hands, especially when Sam Graham and Bannister snapped goals early in the quarter to give the visitors the lead.  Things were tight, with some heavy collisions felt from the sidelines as both teams went toe to toe.   Steven Payne took two tremendous marks in the space of thirty seconds as the Hawks continued to press.  When Jack McMahon goaled, the Hawks led by sixteen points and the Dons were in some trouble.  Zac Trigwell would run into an open goal late in the term to narrow the margin, giving the Dons a bit of momentum going into the last term.

The final term was tense with Ben Frazer kicking the opening goal before Ben Howlett took a mark over this opponent to put the Dons back in front.  Jack McMahon made sure that was short lived as the Hawks regained the lead by four points.   Both teams would run into open goals and miss, and both teams also hit the post, and unusually, both hit the top of the post in an exciting final term.  Scores were locked at 9.5 (59) for quite sometime, before the Dons managed a behind to take the lead.  They held that margin for the remaining four minutes to record a one point win, leading into next weeks finals series where they will host Bunbury on Sunday in an Elimination Final.
