Finals Take Shape After Win To Hawks And Bulls

Going into the final round of the SWFL season, we knew Harvey Bulls and Augusta Margaret River would play off in an Elimination Final, but we didn’t know where, which would be dependent on Saturday nights results.

The results went the way of both teams, and with the winning margins being 64 points to the Bulls and 60 points to the Hawks respectively, meaning the ladder positions remain unchanged, with the Bulls to host the Hawks in the Elimination final, either on Saturday or Sunday in the first week of the finals.

At Gloucester Park, South Bunbury were highly competitive in the opening term, kicking with the aide of a slight breeze to the town end.  After kicking the first goal, the home team kicked into gear, kicking the next two before Jed Montgomerie received a free kick and goaled to give the Tigers back the lead.   The margin was extended further at the 27 minute mark, when Leigh Kohlmann goaled to give the visitors a nine point lead at the first change.  Unlike previous weeks, the Hawks were hesitant, and were missing targets, which aided the defending premiers with the quarter time lead.

Both teams traded goals to start the second quarter, before the Hawks started to get on top.  Wayward kicking kept the Tigers in the match, and scores were level at the 12 minute mark when the Tigers goaled against the run of play.  This sparked the Hawks into action, with two late goals to take a 15 point lead into the main break.  A highlight came in the way of Kyle Hams who took a spectacular mark at half back, to bring some joy to the Tiger faithful.

The second half was all the Hawks, kicking ten goals to three, with the home team having ten goal kickers at the final siren.   The Hawks, who only weeks ago dismantled Harvey Bulls at Gloucester Park,  will take plenty of confidence into next weekends Elimination Final at Harvey Oval, in what promises to be a great match.  For the defending premiers, their season has been a spectacular fall from grace, losing every game in the second round apart from round ten, when they defeated Carey Park, and the season is officially over for the Tigers.
