Gritty Win To Lions At Brunswick

It wasn’t pretty, but Harvey Brunswick Leschenault got the job done when they defeated Augusta Margaret River on Saturday afternoon at Brunswick Oval, in round eleven of the Dale Alcock Homes South West, SWFL season.

On a perfect day for football, scoring was at a premium as both defences took control for a large period of the match.

The only goal of the first term was kicked by Geoff Saunders as a result of a defensive error, with both teams missing easy shots, in a tight opening term.

Jack McMahon converted a set shot early in the second quarter giving the Hawks the lead, as goals continued to be at a premium with only one behind kicked in the next thirteen minutes.  Steven Payne eventually kicked a goal from a set shot putting the Hawks six points in front, but Blake Offer responded immediately, leveling the scores.  The best passage of play for the entire first half ended with Thomas McDonald who kicked a goal in time-on, to give the Hawks a seven point lead, the biggest of the match.

A defensive error in the opening minutes of the third saw Fraser Ward convert, reducing the margin to a point. Ty Armitage snapped a good goal soon after putting the Lions back in front, but when Harry Chadwick ran into an open goal, scores were level again.  John Manuel put the Lions back in front at the fifteen minute mark, when he marked and goaled, and when Saunders kicked his second, the margin was ten points, the biggest lead of the match.   Sam Berridge made a brilliant defensive save, when the Lions were destined to go further in front as the Lions went into the final term with a six point lead.

The Hawks couldn’t buy a goal in the second half, with their last nine scoring shots all being behinds, but the Hawks amazingly remained in the match until the 16 minute mark of the final term, when Blake Soulos goaled, extending the margin to twelve points.   Despite not kicking a goal, Jarrod Humphries would win play of the day with the game still in the balance.  Humphries was able to read a kick across goals, and with an outstretched hand was able to get the ball to ground, getting it to Pierce Ferguson who put the game beyond doubt.  Saunders kicked a goal on the final siren to make the final margin 23 points, which just seven minutes earlier was six points.

The match had eight lead changes and four times the scores were level in a tight game of football.   The Hawks drop to fifth on the ladder, while the Lions sit third, one game behind Bunbury and one game ahead of Donnybrook.
