Hawks Storm Home In Arctic Conditions

Augusta Margaret River consolidated their position in the top five, with a thrilling come from behind victory at Gloucester Park on Saturday afternoon, in the opening game of round fifteen.

The game was played in freezing conditions which included cyclonic winds, with the Eaton Boomers kicking with the wind in the first quarter.

Brandon Jetta beat two defenders and the goal post to snap over his head to kick the opening goal, followed by another snap from deep in the pocket to give the Boomers a perfect start.  When Karl Collard goaled at the eight minute mark, signs weren’t looking good for the home team.  Matt Jukes snapped a great goal into the wind, but Connor Gadecki and Jarrod Humphries goaled soon after opening the lead further.  A defensive howler on the goal line by Ben Gerrans, who tried to rush the ball across the goal line but missed it, gave the Boomers a late goal and a 27 point opening lead.

The rain started falling again, and the Hawks had total domination in their own half of the ground, but had trouble scoring, with Matt Jukes eventually kicking the only goal of the term late in the second quarter, which left the home team still 21 points adrift at the main break.

The margin extended further when Brandon Jetta kicked his third goal, again over his head in spectacular fashion at the start of the third quarter.  After this point the Hawks dominated possession into the strong wind and had a number of opportunities to goal but didn’t. Eventually Matt Jukes kicked a goal in the goal square, and when Seve Grantis snapped a goal minutes later the margin was narrowed to eleven points.   Jukes marked again, seconds before the three quarter time siren, only to kick it into the man on the mark.

Jetta kicked his fourth for the match at the start of the final term, his first conventional kick at goal for the match.  The Hawks hit the front for the first time in the match at the twelve minute mark of the final term when Beau Morgan kicked truly.  Just when it was thought the weather couldn’t get worse it hailed for a few minutes, with the Hawks extending their lead in the horrendous conditions with two goals from Ben Gerrans.

The Hawks kicked six goals in the final term after kicking five in the first three quarters, while Eaton only kicked two goals after quarter time.   The Hawks will be red hot favourites to beat Busselton next Saturday night, after the Magpies failed to score until the final term in their clash with Harvey Brunswick Leschenault, while Eaton will be looking to rebound when they play top placed Donnybrook in the next round.
