Hawks Take Points At Gloucester Park

It wasn’t pretty, but Augusta Margaret River claimed the four points on Saturday night, in the opening game of round nine of the South West Football League, at Gloucester Park.

In a tight first quarter the home team held sway, leading by three points at the first break, in what was a tough, physical opening.

The second quarter was similar to the first, with plenty of scrimmages, but the home team were able to kick four goals to two for the quarter, and when Jack Hick kicked a goal at the twenty two minute mark, the margin stretched to 22 points, before a late goal to the Lions narrowed the margin to 16 points at half time.

The Hawks got the better of the Lions in the third kicking three goals to open the margin to 35 points, but a massive kick right on the siren gave the Lions some hope at the final break.

Things closed further when the visitors kicked the opening goal of the last quarter.  The Lions dominated possession, but squandered opportunities in front of goal, and eventually Augusta Margaret River scored a goal at the opposite end, cancelling out all of the Lions dominance.  Ultimately Harvey Brunswick Leschenault would outscore the Hawks by one point in the final stanza, with both teams inaccurate in front of goals.

The win puts Augusta Margaret River into third place for the moment, in what continues to be a congested Ladder.

In a low scoring affair Jack Hick was the dominant forward, kicking four majors for the home team, while David Newman kicked three for the Lions.
