Magpies Swoop On Wounded Eagles

Busselton Magpies have recorded their second win of the season, accounting for an injury ravaged Collie Eagles team at Sir Stewart Bovell Park on Saturday night, before a healthy crowd.

The Eagles who were two weeks ago, sitting on top of the ladder with a percentage in excess of 225%, are now seventh with a percentage of just 90.74% after successive losses to Donnybrook and Busselton.   Former Fremantle Docker, Ryan Crowley made his debut for the Eagles, but his presence couldn’t account for the ten players currently on the sidelines with injuries for the Collie side.

Busselton conversely were coming off a loss to Eaton Boomers, and had three goals on the board within the first ten minutes, and it wasn’t looking any better for the visitors soon after when Steve Cameron goaled again, giving the home team a 25 point quarter time lead.

The lead soon extended to greater than six goals as the Maggies kicked the first two in the second quarter, before Matt Michael kicked Collie’s opening goal at the 8 minute mark of the second quarter.  Collie rallied momentarily, kicking two further goals in quick succession to reduce the margin to 20 points, but late goals to Busselton had the lead at 31 points at half time.

Busselton showed great ball movement in the third, kicking an early goal to snuff out any chance of a Collie comeback.

Steve Cameron was superb at full forward, kicking seven goals, including several contested marks, while Reegan Mrsich for the second week in a row kicked four goals.  Matt Michael kicked three goals for Collie, two of them in the final term, but five goals at the other end extended the margin to 58 points at the final siren.  Busselton are now fourth on the ladder over night at the mid point of round four.

All teams have a bye next week, which will be very handy for Collie, who will face South Bunbury in round five in Collie, while Busselton will face Carey Park at Kelly Park.
