Panthers Keep Finals Hopes Alive

Carey Park have defeated Augusta Margaret River at Kelly Park on Sunday, in the final game of round sixteen of the Dale Alcock Homes South West, South West Football League season.

In a match that promised so much, with so much on the line, the game was an anti-climax, with Carey Park winning by 72 points, leading for all but the first eight minutes of the match.

With both sides looking to win to give themselves the best opportunity of making finals, the Hawks made the early running but couldn’t find the major opening, which ultimately would be the story of the day for the Hawks.    Nic Bonomelli, Beau Depiazzi and Brian Hughes all kicked goals for Carey Park in the opening term, which saw the home side lead by nineteen points leading into the second quarter.

The Hawks coach, Blake Anderson, was livid at quarter time, and it seemed to work, with the Hawks dominating the second term, with Miles Bridgland having three shots at goal in the first six minutes of the quarter, as the midfield started to dominate.   For all of their dominance, the Hawks couldn’t put the scoreboard pressure on the Panthers, who would extend their lead at half time to forty points, with Hughes kicking two goals in the final five minutes of the quarter.

Carey Park put the game out of reach in the third quarter, kicking the first three goals of the quarter.   Jed Spence and Josh Willcox would kick two quick goals for the Hawks, but going into the final term, the home side still led by fifty one points.

While the Panthers were kicking goals from deep in the pockets, the Hawks were missing time and time again from right in front, including two kicks going out on the full, as the Hawks pondered what might have been, as Carey Park celebrated a 72 point win.

Jamahl Mulholland and Kelvin Lawrence played well for the Panthers while Zac Dronow played well for the Hawks.
