Panthers On Right End Of Another Thriller

Carey Park have defeated Augusta Margaret River in the final minute of the match at Kelly Park, in round twelve of the Dale Alcock Homes South West, South West Football League season.

Carey Park won the toss and kicked with a handy breeze in front of a small, yet vocal crowd with Kelvin Lawrence giving the Pathers the early advantage with a clever snap.   The Panthers went end to end to set up their second goal which saw Brady Lenaghan goal from inside the goal square, while late in the term, Lenaghan would snap a good goal, giving the home side a nineteen point lead, with the Hawks registering a single behind.

It took just two minutes for Lawrence to goal into the breeze, and the signs weren’t looking good for the Hawks.  They tightened the game right up to the point there wasn’t another goal for twenty minutes, which would be the Hawks first via Jed Spence.  A minute later, a set shot from Spence again, outside 50m narrowed the gap to two goals at half time.

With just six goals kicked in the first half, the third quaeter delivered nine.    Jamie Meade coverted the opening goal to extend the margin three goals, before Anthony Marinovich ran into and open goal to make the margin twelve points again.  The teams then traded goals, with four kicked in four minutes.  Both defensive lines then went to work, stopping the scoring completely for the next seven minutes as the ball traveled end to end.  The Hawks then looked invincible kicking three goals in five minutes, with Max Spyvee putting the Hawks in front.

Meade again kicked the opening goal, this time in the last quarter, giving the Panthers back the lead.   In a pulsating last quarter, Marinovich goaled again putting the Hawks in front by five points.   Brian Hughes bobbed up with a clever snap midway through the final term giving the Panthers that one point lead yet again.   Just before time on Max Spyvee snapped a good goal, and the Hawks were back in front again by four points.  In a desperate few minutes, the ball lived in Carey Parks forward line but the Hawks fought them off galantly.  With a minute to play Hughes marked forty metres out, and put the Panthers back in front for the third time in the quarter.   The Panthers were able to bottle the ball up in the centre of the ground, recording a two point win, their fifth match of the season where the margin has been three points or less.  In round four the Hawks won by a point with the last kick of the day.

The win keeps Carey Park in touch with the five, and now puts the Hawks in a vulnerable position, having played more games than every other team and in fifth place.     The Hawks will now face a showdown with Busselton next Saturday afternoon, while Carey Park will play Eaton at Glen Huon on Sunday.

Jamie Meade was awarded the Think Mental Health ball.
