Premiers Advance After Tough Elimination Final

Donnybrook, the defending Premiers, have kept their season alive after defeating Augusta Margaret River this afternoon at Gloucester Park, before the biggest crowd at the venue in the last ten years.

The home team started the best with Ricky Cary kicking the opening goal, before the opening quarter turned into an arm wrestle, with the ball going from maul to maul.  Eventually the play opened up, with the Hawks goaling again, with the Dons getting a late goal to reduce the margin to three points at quarter time.

The second quarter had the Donnybrook midfield well on top, something that had been missing in the final two qualifying matches in the regular season.  The Dons kicked four unanswered goals, to give the visitors a twenty point lead at the main break.

The third quarter was a tight one, but a late goal to Chris Atthowe who ran onto a loose ball and soccered it through from 15 metres, the margin was out to twenty seven points, with the Hawks needing to more than double their score in the last quarter to have any chance of winning.

It was a bridge too far as it turned out, and despite three late goals, Donnybrook were always in control of the match, and the Hawks would become the first casualty of the final series.  It was the Hawks 38th League Final, with their record now 19 wins and 19 losses.

Donnybrook will play the loser of tomorrows Qualifying Final between Eaton Boomers and Bunbury, with the match to be played either at Glen Huon Reserve or PC Payne Park.

Earlier, Bunbury easily accounted for Harvey Brunswick Leschenault in the Women’s First Semi Final, South Bunbury eliminated Collie Eagles by 30 points in the Reserves competition, and Augusta Margaret River defeated Eaton Boomers in the Colts also by 30 points, after scores were level midway through the third quarter.
