Season 2023 Starts Tomorrow

The 2023, Dale Alcock Homes South West, SWFL Premiership Season commences tomorrow with three games to start the 67th season of the competition.

In a stand-alone Saturday afternoon fixture, Carey Park will play Bunbury at Kelly Park.  The last time the two teams met, Carey Park caused a massive upset at Payne Park in Round 12, defeating Bunbury by 41 points.   Both teams will have different line-ups to that match, with Matt Martin and Joel Houghton joining the Bulldogs giving them a potent forward line, while the Panthers have a mixture of youth and experience, and will be looking to make a winning start to the season.

On Saturday evening, Collie Eagles will host South Bunbury under new lights at the Collie Recreation Ground.  Last years Grand Finalists will take on a new look Collie line-up under the leadership of Talan Michael, with a host of recruits.  South Bunbury have a strong list and will be looking to continue their winning run over the Eagles, with the last victory being by a crushing 91 points.

At opposite ends of the competition, defending premiers Augusta Margaret River will host Busselton in the Busselton Toyota Cup.  Busselton were the only team to defeat the Hawks twice in 2022, including winning the opening round match at Gloucester Park last season in the rain, which is also forecast on Saturday evening.  Both teams have recruited well in the off season, in what should be a top class encounter at Gloucester Park.

On Sunday in the Peter Butcher Cup, Donnybrook will host Eaton at VC Mitchell Park in a match both teams will be ticking as a winnable match.  Eaton have lost some key players but Paul Rinder is a prize recruit for the Boomers and will be looking to dominate the ruck contests. but they will need to stop the midfield run of the Dons who will be playing in front of their home fans.

In the final match of the round, the Harvey Fresh Cup will be held at Harvey, with the Bulls to play the Lions.  The Bulls broke a five game winning streak to win the Cup last season by 36 points, with Brad Holmes putting on a devastating display up forward.  The Bulls have been very prominent in the recruitment stakes, with Sam Lewis set to debut for the Bulls after winning last years premiership with the Hawks.
