South West Back In The Hunt

The Nexus South West League team are back in the hunt to make the Nutrien Ag Country Championship Grand Final, after beating the previously undefeated Peel Cavaliers at Mineral Resources Park on Saturday morning.

The South West team, smarting from yesterday’s loss, were sharp and brought great intensity to the contest, applying plenty of pressure to the Cavaliers.

The opening goal came the way of a bullet pass from Greg Humphries just forward of the wing, onto the chest of Zac Trigwell who converted from 45 metres.

Trigwell goaled soon after courtesy of a very strong mark, to give the South West a thirteen point advantage.

The defensive forays of the Peel side were thwarted by Tom Gorter, Jon Meadmore and Talan Michael, while Shaun Crane provided plenty of opportunities through the middle of the ground.

Kade Szyszka kicked the South Wests next goal, courtesy of a chain of play down the outer-side wing, giving the South West a very hand lead into half time.

The second half saw Peel match up better against the South West with Jeffrey Carter kicking a long goal for Peel.  Kelvin Lawrence and Zac Trigwell, who kicked his third from outside 50m answered soon after, to give the South West a 28 point win.

“Our intensity was great today”, said Coach Chris Kinninmont.  “Our attack on the ball and field play was fantastic”, he added.

South West have now moved to the top of the ladder, however percentage will decide who advances to the Grand Final, with South West having one further match to play against bottom placed Ongerup Fooball Association.
