Thorne Becomes SWFL Leading Goal Kicker

In the never ending quest to update the SWFL records, one of the most common questions has been who has kicked the most goals ever in the SWFL.

Records were kept, some lost, some not recorded over 65 years of the competition, but meticulous records have been kept between 1996 and the present day, while other records in their entirety have been located back to 1983, enough to confirm that Kurnutt Thorne has kicked 560 goals, one more than Matthew Martin who for a long time has been listed as the leading goal kicker with 559.

Thorne played for three clubs, South Bunbury, Boyanup Capel Dardanup (now Eaton Boomers) and Carey Park where he was his most prolific kicking 457 goals.  Thorne kicked 113 goals in 1987 (including finals), his most successful year, backing it up a year later with 88 goals.  It has previously been reported that Thorne was one of only a few players in the SWFL who had fans swap ends at each break just to watch him kick for goal.

Records for 1989, 1990, 1992, 1993 and 1995 will be the subject of archival work via the South Western Times to then have 40 years of accurate records between 1983 and 2022.

The quest will continue, as players in the 1970s also kicked large bags of goals and Thorne’s reign may only be as long as it takes to locate and collate those records.

Anyone with official records from 1978 to 1957 can contact the SWFL office 0407 980 000.

The current records are listed on the SWFL website.
