Eaton came within a quarter of causing one of the biggest upsets in recent times when they played South Bunbury on Saturday afternoon at Glen Huon Reserve, in round three of the Dale Alcock Homes South West, SWFL Season.
After a big defeat at the hands of Donnybrook in the opening round, and a 145 point demolition at the mercy of Busselton, no-one gave the Boomers a chance of winning against last years Grand Finalists.
To the enormous credit of the players, the Boomers led for almost three quarters in a low scoring affair, with the home team leading by a point at quarter time, and three points at half time. The home team were assisted by the Tigers woeful kicking at goals, with the visitors 1.7.13 at half time.
The third quarter saw the rain come, and the Tigers kicked two quick goals to take the lead before kicking the only three goals of the final term to win by 27 points.
Greg Humphries in the first half was absolutely brilliant for the Boomers, while the defence of the home team held firm stopping the Tigers from opening up the forward line and to get any cohesion. Paul Rinder rucked practically the entire match and had the better of the dual in the middle. Shaun Crane, Thomas Gorter and Blake Piggott played well for the Tigers, who will be breathing a sigh of relief after today’s result.
“It was a fantastic effort by the boys”, said Coach Chris Kinninmont after the match.
The Tigers will host Dunsborough in round four, while Eaton will host Harvey Bulls who lost in a close match today against the Hawks.
