A stunning third quarter by South Bunbury has ended the Harvey Bulls season, when the two teams met on Sunday at Hands Oval in the Dale Alcock Homes South West, Preliminary Final.
Brad Holmes started the scoring in the third minute of the match courtesy of a 50m penalty, before Kade Wallrodt kicked his first of the afternoon minutes later. Michael Bennell put the Bulls eight points up at the sixteen minute mark when he converted before Wallrodt kicked two goals in a minute to put the Tigers in front. On the sound of quarter time, Dylan Chatley goaled for the Bulls to give them a one point advantage.
Rhys Anzellino snapped a goal in the opening minute of the second quarter, but that was negated three minutes later by a Shaun Crane goal from a set shot. An arm wrestle then developed as goals dried up, but the Bulls had multiple scoring shots all behinds in a thirteen minute period. When Bennell kicked his second the Bulls lead was 11 points, but a goal very late in the quarter to Kevin Chitty on the run saw the margin just four points at half time.
Not even Nostradamus could have seen what happened after the main break, when South Bunbury kicked five goals in eight minutes, totally changing the complexion of the match. They would kick seven for the quarter and kept the Bulls goal-less, effectively ending the contest.
The final term was just playing out time with the Bulls continue to try to the very end but the damage was done. The Tigers had 23 scoring shots to the Bulls 20, but the inaccuracy in the second quarter would ultimately cost the Bulls who would succumb to the final margin of 43 points.
South Bunbury will now face Augusta Margaret River in next Sunday’s Grand Final.
