Tigers Too Strong For Eagles

South Bunbury started their 2023 SWFL Season with a comfortable win over the Collie Eagles on Saturday night, downing the home team by 38 points, before a healthy crowd.

Under the new lights at the Collie Recreation Ground, the illumination of the light towers was matched by a spectacular lightning show around the ground for most of the match.

South Bunbury set up the victory in the first half, keeping the home team goal-less.  Several rain showers in the second half freed up the scoring somewhat, with the Eagles matching South Bunbury in the second half and at one stage, narrowed the margin to eighteen points. South Bunbury would then kick four of the last five goals, putting last years Grand Finalists on top of the ladder after the opening day of the season.

Blake Piggott and Cole Sawyer played well for the visitors with Leigh Kohlmann (3) and Jace Cormack (2), the only multiple goal scorers in the match.

The Eagles tried hard throughout, with Kye Baker and Luke Abbott amongst their best.

South Bunbury will play Augusta Margaret River in round two (next Saturday), with the Hawks losing to Busselton on Saturday evening. Meanwhile, Collie Eagles will travel to Harvey, to take on the Bulls next Sunday.
