The Alcoa SWFL Women’s team have won their fifth consecutive Country Championship, defeating Peel in the Grand Final at Lane Group Stadium, Mandurah of Friday afternoon.
The SWFL lost to Peel in the final round robin game, however they led all the way in the decider.
Larissa Versaci kicked the opening goal, the only goal of the opening term to give the SWFL a seven point lead at quarter time. Christie Daniels snapped a good goal in the second, with Peel still without a goal at half time.
Peel came out full of vigour in the third term, with Kiarni Stevens laying some brilliant, bruising tackles on the opposition, and assisted by Melinda Bobby the duo held the backline together. Zoe Huggett was on the end of one of Stevens defensive plays leading to the SWFL third goal, before Tess Hall took the ball out of the ruck for Peel to score their first goal, pegging the margin back to eleven points at three quarter time.
As much as Peel tried, the SWFL defence stood up time and time again leading to Huggett marking in the goal square, kicking the fourth goal for the SWFL and effectively clinching the game. Rennie Meadmore ran onto a loose ball and converted near the end of the match giving the SWFL a 23 point win, and fifth consecutive Championship.
