WA Day Derby This Sunday

The oldest rivalry in the South West Football League will be on display this Sunday, when Bunbury play South Bunbury in the Dale Alcock Homes South West, WA Day Derby at PC Payne Park.

South Bunbury go into the match undefeated, while Bunbury are fourth with just one loss and coming off a massive victory against Eaton.

The WA Day Derby has been contested 16 times between the two clubs, with Bunbury having won twelve of them, and eight of the last ten, including last years Derby which never got into the third quarter after an electrical storm hit Hands Oval at half time.   Although there is plenty of weather around, including heavy rain forecast, this will fall late Saturday and early Sunday, with the official forecast during the derby itself for just 0.1mm per hour, which will be a relief for fans and players alike, although the surface is likely to be very wet under foot.

South Bunbury so far this season have restricted the opposition to no more that six goals in a match, which was achieved by Augusta Margaret River and Donnybrook who both managed 6.5.41.  Busselton last weekend managed 5.5.35, as did Harvey Bulls, while Collie Eagles managed 5.3.33 and Dunsborough 5.1.31.

The second half of matches is where the Tigers have dominated however so too have Bunbury, who have kicked 44 goals in five games after half time and restricted the opposition to 18.    South Bunbury have played one game more and have kicked 49 goals after half time and conceded just 12.

Both teams have great midfields, and Joel Houghton for Bunbury has twice this season kicked ten goals, making this a great contest.  South Bunbury have three times this season kicked nineteen goals, against Collie Eagles, Dunsborough and Harvey Bulls, while Bunbury have kicked 23 goals against Busselton and 27 against Eaton.  A goal kicking showdown is not likely to be on the cards, however it highlights the firepower at the disposal of both teams.

Despite the inclement weather in the morning, a big crowd is expected for the SWFL marquee match of the season.
