Donnybrook Perform The Great Escape

The Collie Eagles have almost pulled off the upset of the season, but it would be Donnybrook performing the great escape at the Collie Recreation Ground on Sunday.

Before a healthy crowd the Dons needed to win to keep their chances of finishing third, and a qualifying final berth with Carey Park alive, but no one told the Eagles, who took it right up to the visitors.

After an even first term, the Eagles kept the Dons goal-less in the second term while kicking three goals of their own, to lead by ten points at half time.  The margin was still nine points in favour of Collie at three quarter time, as the Dons inaccuracy looked destined to cost them and Collie looked just as destined to cause the upset of the season.

After a could of early behinds to Donnybrook, the Dons kicked a goal to lessen the margin to a point, before Collie kicked their ninth goal of the match to make the margin seven points again.  Harley Corbett kicked his fourth to narrow the margin again, before scores were level at the fourteen minute mark.  A late goal put the Dons in front the relief of their fans, escaping with a seven point win.

The margin though was not enough for the Dons to hold third spot as South Bunbury defeated Bunbury by 34 points, enough to drop the Dons back to fourth.

Collie in some ways played their best game of the season despite the loss, with Jack Davidson playing an excellent game, kicking four goals, while Adam Bignell was again one of the Eagles best.

Donnybrook host Augusta Margaret River in the final round at VC Mitchell Park, while Collie will play Busselton on Saturday evening.
