Dons Too Good For Battling Hawks

The two time defending premiers of the SWFL are on the ropes currently in their attempt to win a third consecutive premiership, after Donnybrook easily accounted for Augusta Margaret River at Gloucester Park on Saturday afternoon.

The Hawks are now a full game outside the five, with injury and unavailability having the premiers plenty of work to do in the second half of the season, with Donnybrook winning by sixty points.

The first ten minutes saw Donnybrook squander some easy opportunities at goal, as both teams provided plenty of pressure in the early exchanges.  The first goal didn’t come until the ten minute mark with Byron George converting, putting the Hawks in front.  The lead was short lived with Zac Trigwell kicking two goals in three minutes, and when Sam Bevan converted a set shot the margin was sixteen points in favour of the Dons.   A further late goal just before quarter time, spelt worrying signs for the Hawks.

Zac Dronow kicked and early goal for the Hawks but that would be it, with the Dons dominating the second quarter kicking four goals, including a great goal from Tyson McWilliam from long range.

Zac Trigwell celebrates a goal in the second quarter.

The second half meandered, with the Dons keeping the Hawks goal-less in the third term, with Sam Perkusich kicking his second goal of the day after the three quarter time siren to rub salt into the wounds.

The Hawks did play out the match in the final quarter, with arguably the goal of the day going to Ben Watson who kicked a fantastic goal on the run, to brighten up a dreary day for the home team.

Perkusich played a great game and kicked three goals, while Luke Dale and Bradman May also played well for the Dons, who consolidate second place on the ladder.  Things don’t get easier for the Hawks, who will face Busselton in round twelve, while the Dons will face Eaton at Glen Huon Reserve next Sunday.
