Lions Over Come Slow Start

Harvey Brunswick Leschenault have defeated Augusta Margaret River at Gloucester Park on Sunday afternoon, in the Dale Alcock Homes South West premiership season, despite a very slow start.

The Hawks would keep the Lions goal-less in the opening term, with Jed Spence and Josh Fry kicking goals in the opening ten minutes of the match, as the home side dominated the opening quarter.

Fry would kick the opening goal of the second term, after which time the Lions snapped into action, kicking three goals in seven minutes, levelling the scores.  Tom McDonald put the Hawks back in front, but Jesse Crichton would reply soon after to level the scores again.  Two late goals to the Lions would be crucial leading into half time, giving the visitors all the momentum going into the major break.

The third quarter would be a tight affair, with Leroy Anderson getting the Hawks within six points, but a very late goal to Matthew Rogers gave the Lions a 19 point lead at three quarter time.

Both sides traded behinds at the start of the last, when the Hawks desperately needed goals.  Eventually the goals would come, but to the Lions who had a game high 30 point advantage with ten minutes to play.  Zac Dronow and Byron Geroge gave the home side some hope with two quick goals, but Rogers would pop up again, snuffing out any last minute comeback.

Connor Carbone and Ty Anderson played well for the Lions, keeping up their great individual form, while Kieran Yakas and Jed Spence were the best for the Hawks.  The win keeps the Lions in fourth place, but as a result of the loss, the Hawks drop to seventh.  The job for the Hawks won’t get any easier next week, when they play arch-rival Busselton at Sir Sewart Bovell Park on Saturday, while the Lions who have now won six consecutive games, will play Bunbury who have an eleven game winning streak of their own.
