Harvey Brunswick Leschenault have defeated Augusta Margaret River at Gloucester Park, in the opening game of round five in the Dale Alcock Homes South West, South West Football League season.
In a low scoring match it took nineteen minutes for the first goal, with Byron George converting a set shot, only for Jarrod Humphries to kick a goal moments later to reduce the margin to one point at quarter time.
The match was decided in the second quarter, with the Lions kicking four unanswered goals . Humphries kicked a goal in the opening thirty seconds and when Jesse Crichton goaled on the run the margin had become 13 points. With light rain falling, both defensive lines took over, with the Hawks finding it hard to get a good opportunity to score a goal. Peppering from deep in the pockets, the Hawks managed five behinds during the middle stages of the quarter, and Jai Rout was then able to convert from a set shot to extend the Lions advantage further. Somehow Blake Soulos found himself alone in the goal square right on the point of half time, to give the visitors a handy 20 point buffer at the main break.
The Hawks pegged back the lead in the third term, which had some heated moments, which led to the Umpires sending Ty Armitage from the ground with a red card.
Leading by eleven points at the final change, both teams went goal for goal to start the last, but the Hawks could never get closer than ten points. The inaccurate kicking would eventually tell, with the Lions having five less scoring shots, and winning their third game of the season. Jesse Crichton and Ned Gaulter played particularly well and Jarrod Humphries took some strong marks to compliment his three goals. Ben Watson had plenty of possessions for the Hawks and kicked three goals, while the ever dependable Linc Adams also played well.
