Collie Break Through

Collie Eagles have won their first game in 2023, defeating Eaton at Glen Huon Reserve on Sunday afternoon as part of round eight of the South West Football League Season.

The Eagles, who hadn’t won a game in 2023, have been notoriously slow starters, but bounced out of the blocks on Sunday afternoon, kicking three goals in the opening term to lead by nine points.

It would the the second quarter that would see Collie go on to eventual victory, with the visitors kicking four goals to one, to have a 27 point lead at half time.

The Boomers who the week before had 32 scoring shots for the match, had just 7 to half time, and were struggling to get the ball inside 5o as the Eagles dominated possession.

Eaton did make a challenge in the third quarter getting within 13 points before Jayce Fontana extended the margin further, as the Eagles went to three quarter time with a 21 point lead.

The visitors kicked the only goal of the final term, winning their first game of the season by 27 points.  Fittingly, Jayce Fontana in his 150th match was the best player on the ground, kicking three goals.  Jackson Broadbent returned to also play well for Collie along with Ben Higgs and Liam Reuben.  Brendan Craig was Eaton’s best player, while Rex Kennedy and Paul Rinder also had plenty of possessions.

The Eagles return to Collie this Sunday to take on Harvey Brunswick Leschenault who have defeated Augusta Margaret River and Dunsborough in the last two weeks, while Eaton will host Carey Park on Saturday at Glen Huon.
